मूल तर्क (The problem, reconstructed)
- तत्त्वमीमांसा (metaphysics) asks the deepest question: behind the changing world we perceive, what is ultimately real — the अंतिम / परम सत्य (ultimate truth)?
- The problem is forced by a tension anyone can feel: the world is many things and is constantly changing, yet we sense something one and permanent underneath. Is reality ultimately one unchanging substance (monism) or many changing things (pluralism)? This is the One-vs-Many, permanence-vs-change problem at the root of all metaphysics.
- A recurring move is to distinguish levels of reality: the व्यावहारिक (vyāvahārika — empirical / practical) level, where the world of many changing things is real enough to live and act in, and the पारमार्थिक (pāramārthika — absolute) level, where only the ultimate is truly real. Appearance is not nothing — it is real at its own level.
- In Advaita Vedānta this becomes: only ब्रह्मन् (Brahman — the one absolute reality) is ultimately real; the plural world is माया (māyā — the appearance that veils the real), and आत्मा (ātmā — the self) = ब्रह्मन्. Other schools answer differently — a preview of the whole series.
⚠️ verify against lecture — whether Divyakirti centres Advaita here or surveys several answers even-handedly.
- The schools’ answers are the metaphysics course: चार्वाक — only matter is real; अद्वैत वेदान्त (Advaita) — only Brahman, the world is māyā; सांख्य (Sāṅkhya) — two irreducible reals, पुरुष (puruṣa — consciousness) and प्रकृति (prakṛti — matter); बौद्ध (Buddhist) — no permanent substance at all, only momentary flux (क्षणिकवाद — kṣaṇika-vāda); जैन (Jain) — reality is many-sided and both one and many depending on standpoint.
प्रमुख शब्द (Key terms)
- सत् (sat — being / that which exists / is real) — the target of the whole inquiry.
- माया (māyā — appearance that conceals the real) — not “illusion = false,” but a lower-order reality.
- व्यावहारिक / पारमार्थिक (vyāvahārika / pāramārthika — empirical / absolute levels of truth).
एक गंभीर आपत्ति (One serious objection)
Questions about a “reality behind appearances” are meaningless. If no possible perception could ever settle whether Brahman (or matter, or flux) is the ultimate, then the dispute is empty word-play — a charge a Chārvāka, and later a logical positivist, would both press.
उत्तर (The reply)
You cannot actually escape metaphysics; you can only leave it unexamined. Even doing science presupposes metaphysical commitments — that there is a mind-independent world, that it is law-governed, that the future will resemble the past (induction). Those are not themselves empirical findings; they are the assumptions that make findings possible. So “only the verifiable is meaningful” is itself an unverifiable metaphysical claim — it saws off its own branch. The questions may be unsettled, but they are unavoidable, and they organize every other inquiry.
जहाँ यह मेरे काम से टकराया (Where this collided with my work)
The appearance vs reality distinction is the theory of abstraction layers. You write against a clean model — objects, types, a table of rows — while the machine is really doing something else entirely: cache lines, syscalls, a heap of pages the row doesn’t physically live sorted in. The abstraction is व्यावहारिक — real enough to build on — and the hardware is पारमार्थिक — what is actually happening. Every “leaky abstraction” bug is the pāramārthika level punching through the vyāvahārika one, and every senior debugger is someone who can drop from the appearance (the API) to the reality (the bytes) on demand.

सारांश (Summary)
(Practice questions — understanding, not recall)
- Advaita calls the world माया. Why is “māyā = the world is false/nonexistent” a misreading, and how does the व्यावहारिक / पारमार्थिक distinction fix it?
- The verificationist says “unverifiable questions are meaningless.” Explain why that principle is self-undermining when turned on itself.
- Take the One-vs-Many problem and place two schools on opposite ends of it. What exactly are they disagreeing about — count, permanence, or both?
